The Complete Guide to Switching to Eco-Friendly Cleaning

If you’ve been thinking about switching to eco-friendly cleaning products but aren’t sure where to start, you’re not alone. The cleaning aisle is overwhelming - and half the products that call themselves “natural” or “green” aren’t much better than the conventional stuff.

As a professional cleaner with over 10 years of experience, I’ve tested everything. I’ve used the heavy-duty chemical cleaners, the supermarket eco options, and eventually started making my own. Here’s what I’ve learned about making the switch - and how to do it without sacrificing a genuinely clean home.

Why Switch to Eco-Friendly Cleaning?

The reasons go beyond just being “green.” Conventional cleaning products contain ingredients like parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, and chlorine-based compounds. These don’t just clean your surfaces - they linger in the air you breathe, on the surfaces your kids touch, and eventually wash down the drain into Australian waterways.

For me, the switch was personal. After years of professional cleaning, I started noticing headaches, dry skin, and that burning feeling in my throat after using certain products. When I looked at the ingredient lists, I understood why.

Eco-friendly cleaners use plant-based surfactants instead of petrochemicals, essential oils instead of synthetic fragrance, and skip the harmful preservatives entirely. They work with your home’s environment rather than against it.

What to Look for in Eco Cleaning Products

Not all “eco” products are created equal. Here’s what to check before you buy:

• Ingredient transparency - If a product won’t tell you what’s in it, that’s a red flag. Look for brands that list every ingredient clearly.

• Plant-based surfactants -These are the ingredients that do the actual cleaning. Look for coconut-derived or corn-derived surfactants rather than petroleum-based ones.

• Essential oils over synthetic fragrance -The word “fragrance” on a label can hide dozens of unnamed chemicals. Real essential oils are a better choice.

• No parabens or phthalates - These are preservatives and plasticisers that have been linked to hormone disruption. There’s no reason they need to be in a cleaning spray.

• Australian made - Products made locally have a smaller carbon footprint and are subject to Australian safety standards.

What to Avoid

Watch out for “greenwashing” - products that look eco-friendly but aren’t. Common tricks include using green packaging and nature imagery while the ingredients list tells a different story. Words like “inspired by nature” or “with natural extracts” don’t mean the product is genuinely natural.

Also be wary of products that claim to be “chemical-free.” Everything is technically a chemical (including water). What you’re really looking for is “free from harmful synthetic chemicals.”

How to Make the Switch (Without Overwhelm)

You don’t need to overhaul your entire cleaning cupboard in one go. Here’s a simple approach:

Start with one product. Replace your all-purpose cleaner first - it’s the one you use most often, so you’ll see the biggest immediate impact. A good plant-based multi-purpose spray handles 90% of household cleaning.

Use what you have. Finish your current products before replacing them. There’s no point creating waste by throwing out half-used bottles.

Give it two weeks. Natural cleaners work slightly differently to chemical ones. You might need to let the spray sit on surfaces for 30 seconds before wiping (this is true of most cleaners, but chemical ones mask it with strong fumes that make you think they’re working instantly).

Notice the difference. Most people notice two things immediately: the air in their home smells cleaner (not chemically), and their hands aren’t dry and cracked after a cleaning session.

Do Eco Cleaners Actually Work?

This is the question I get asked most often, and the answer is yes - emphatically. I’ve tested plant-based formulas side by side with commercial chemical cleaners in hundreds of real homes. On everyday kitchen grease, bathroom soap scum, and general household grime, the plant-based formula performs just as well.

The only situation where you might need something stronger is heavy-duty industrial cleaning (think commercial kitchens or construction sites). For normal household use, a well-formulated eco cleaner handles everything.

That’s exactly why I created the Dust 2 Clean range - 9 multi-purpose cleaners that my professional cleaning team uses every day in real Australian homes. If they’re good enough for a professional clean, they’re good enough for yours.
