5 Natural Ingredients That Clean Better Than Chemicals

When people hear “natural cleaning,” they often picture something weak and ineffective - like waving a stick of sage around and hoping the grease disappears. But the truth is, some of the most effective cleaning agents on the planet come from plants.

Here are five natural ingredients that I use in my professional cleaning work and that form the backbone of every Dust 2 Clean product.

1. Plant-Based Surfactants (Coconut-Derived)

Surfactants are the workhorses of any cleaning product - they’re what actually breaks down grease and lifts dirt from surfaces. Most commercial cleaners use petroleum-based surfactants, but plant-based alternatives derived from coconut and corn oil work just as well.

Coconut-derived surfactants are biodegradable, gentle on skin, and effective on everything from kitchen grease to bathroom soap scum. They’re the foundation of our Dust 2 Clean formula.

2. Lemon Myrtle Essential Oil

Lemon Myrtle is an Australian native powerhouse. It contains citral, which is naturally antibacterial and antifungal. It’s also incredibly fragrant - brighter and more complex than regular lemon.

We use Lemon Myrtle in our Lemon Myrtle cleaning spray, and it’s one of our best performers on kitchen surfaces. The natural antibacterial properties mean it’s doing double duty - cleaning and sanitising.

3. Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Australia’s most iconic plant is also a brilliant cleaner. Eucalyptus oil is a natural degreaser, deodoriser, and mild disinfectant. It cuts through sticky residues and leaves surfaces smelling fresh and clean.

It’s also one of those scents that just makes you feel like your home is clean. There’s a reason eucalyptus features in two of our scents - Eucalyptus & Sandalwood and Blue Sage & Eucalyptus.

4. White Vinegar (The Classic)

Vinegar isn’t an ingredient in our products (we use more effective plant-based surfactants), but it deserves a mention because it’s the gateway to natural cleaning for most people.

A 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water is excellent for glass, mirrors, and light descaling. The smell fades quickly, and it’s virtually free. Just avoid using it on natural stone (it’s acidic and can etch marble and granite).

5. Bicarb Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate)

Another pantry staple that’s genuinely effective. Bicarb is a mild abrasive that’s fantastic for scrubbing sinks, ovens, and grout without scratching surfaces. Make a paste with water, apply it to the problem area, leave it for 15 minutes, then scrub and rinse.

Combined with vinegar (the fizzing reaction helps lift baked-on grime), it’s one of the most effective natural cleaning combos out there.

The Bottom Line

Natural ingredients aren’t a compromise, they’re an upgrade. The plant-based surfactants in our Dust 2 Clean products are effective, safe, and biodegradable. You don’t need harsh chemicals to have a clean home.

Want to try plant-based cleaning for yourself? Our multi-purpose sprays start at $13 and come in 9 Australian-inspired scents.
